Vacationers staying in the Yucatan will find ferries and boats to be an enjoyable way to experience all the region offers. Water travel is generally very affordable and provides visitors an opportunity to experience the beautiful weather and gorgeous scenery of the Caribbean waters and Mexican shoreline.

Cozumel, a well-known vacation destination, is an island just off the coast of the city of Playa del Carmen. Two ferries run almost continuously, providing access to the island from the shore. Schedules tend to change frequently, and travelers should always ensure posted schedules are accurate. As a rule, however, the ferry schedule will look like the following:

Playa del Carmen - Cozumel Cozumel - Playa del Carmen
5:00 a.m. 4:00 a.m.
7:00 a.m. 6:00 a.m.
8:00 a.m. 7:00 a.m.
9:00 a.m. 8:00 a.m.
10:00 a.m. 9:00 a.m.
11:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. (noon)
1:00 p.m. 3:00 p.m.
3:00 p.m. 4:00 p.m.
4:00 p.m. 5:00 p.m.
5:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m.
6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m.
7:00 p.m. 10:00 p.m.
9:00 p.m.
11:00 p.m.

The trip lasts just under an hour and the fare for each one-way ticket is $1(USD). A separate return trip ticket will have to be purchased upon departing the island.

In Playa del Carmen, tickets are sold at several locations throughout the city and are almost always available. Leisure travelers are advised against taking the early morning and late afternoon boats because they tend to be packed with workers making their way to and from the island. The best time to catch a ferry is midday or evening, when the weather will be pleasant and the boat uncrowded. Tickets for the return trip may be purchased at the departing dock in Cozumel.

Fisherman will be glad to know that charter boats are always available to take groups out into the bountiful Mexican waters to experience some of the world-class fishing Mexico is known for. Generally these boats provide all the necessary equipment and can help visitors obtain government issued fishing permits.

Travelers who would rather swim with the fish than hook them will also find their niche in Cozumel, where Scuba boats and crews depart regularly. Individuals and groups will be able to rent tanks and suits for their day of diving.

Travel by ferry is essential for vacationers who want to explore both the coast of the Yucatan and the island of Cozumel. Luckily, the ride is pleasant and the fares are low, making it one of the most enjoyable methods of transportation in the Mexican Caribbean.
