Electricity in Cancun and the Mexican Caribbean

If you plan on bringing electronics with you on your trip to the Mexican Caribbean, be aware that your power supply may not be suitable for use.

While the Mexican Caribbean generally follows the trend of the rest of North America and uses the standard 110-volt AC electrical system, three prong outlets are not readily available, so converters for appliances such as laptop computers and hair dryers are often still a necessity.  

Converters are easy enough to find in the shops surrounding the hotel zone of Cancun, and many hotels keep them on hand as well.  Be warned, however, that because Mexico does not have ground wiring, electrical surges are common.  You would be wise to buy a surge protector for any electronics you don't want damaged.

With knowledge of the electrical situation in the Mexican Caribbean, you can arrive prepared.  You don't waste a moment of your time without your favorite electronics, so pack a converter and surge protector, or contact your hotel to reserve these items for your room.
