The Segmental Info System
Bikes and mopeds can be rented at numerous places on the island and are a great alternative to walking through many of the best known tourist areas.
Bicycles have their own distinct advantages. Many of the Mayan ruins, for example, are in protected areas away from roads. Travelers are welcome to walk through the jungle, but the weather and land conditions often make bikes a far more appealing option. In areas of the region that are devoted to natural preservation, bikes are the only permitted mode of transportation.
Mopeds, on the other hand, are a good alternative for covering larger distances between towns, or for independently exploring an area without ecological regulations. Traffic conditions in major cities make helmets an absolute necessity, but courteous drivers and reduced speed limits allow vacationers to use motor scooters for in-town travel. Nonetheless, exercise extreme caution, as many accidents result from an unfamiliarity with road signs and procedures.
Travelers should look at bicycles and mopeds as yet another way to explore the Mexican Caribbean and get the most out of their vacation.
